กกWith a history of 50 years Shaanxi Normal
University, directly affiliated to the State Education
Commission, is situated in the southwest of the big Goose Pagoda,
a famous historical site in Xi'an. The antecessor of Shaanxi
Normal University was the incorporation of the Education
Department of Northwest University into Shaanxi Normal school set
up in 1944. Now, student from 23 provinces are admitted to
Shaanxi Normal University.
กกNot being restricted to teachers
education, the university boasts of a comprehensive range of
disciplines. Subordinated to Shaanxi Normal University are
Political Economics College,Life Science College,Foreign Language College, Adult Education College and Oil
Company Normal College. There are 16 departments with 38 majors,
and pre-college education for minority nationalities. There are
32 research institutes and 23 departmental research sections. The
university also runs a publishing house, university journal
office and editorial office of secondary teaching references.
Northwest training center for education administrators, northwest
training center for normal college teachers and northwest data
center are located in Shaanxi Normal University. Thirty nine
majors offer master degrees and five majors grant doctor
degrees. Eleven professors are authorized to guide Ph.D programs.
At present, the faculties and staff
totals about 2500, including 522 professors and associate
professors, 693 lecturers. In more than 50 years, 72000 students graduated
form Shaanxi Normal University. Since 1978 four items have won
national science and technology prize; 86 provincial or
departmental prize; 156 sub-provincial prize. 18,323 students
were enrolled in 1998. Among them 7,276 were undergraduates;504
postgraduates;6,117 correspondent and night college students;4,426
pre-college, overseas students and trainees.
The university is equipped with advanced
laboratories and a large collection of books, which facilitates
the learning, teaching and research processes. The library has a
storage of 1,960,000 books, including 160,000 imported ones and
over 1,200 kinds of foreign newspapers and periodicals. In
addition to 240,000 volunes of thread-bound classics, the library
gathered many precious slate copies, drawing and calligraphy
works by renowned artists. The large quantity of books covers
liberal arts and sciences, culture and history. The teaching and
experiment facilities are being improved, with an experiment
center, audial-visiual aid center, computer center, 59
aboratories and 50 sets of precision apparatus.
A kindergarten, a primary school and a
secondary school are attached to Shaanxi Normal University to
meet its needs of experiment.
The university strives to create a
propitious environmentto promote international academic and
personnel exchange programs. Since 1981, Shaanxi Normal
University has established cooperative and friendly ties with 20
universities in U.S.A., England, Japan, Australia. Canda and
Belgium. More than 700 overseas students from America, Japan,
Australia and Thailand received their education in Shaanxi Normal
University.
The university covers an area of 50
hectares. With buildings and pavilions shaded by green trees, the
campus is quiet and tastefully laid out. To meet the needs of
economic development and fundamental education, the university is
undergoing a comprehensive change of reform so that it could be
turned into a center of data,education and scientific research in
the northwest region of China.
